Chikbaraik Adivasi

 

 

 

The Chikbaraik are one of Adivasi Groups of the Jharkhand state. They are found in Ranchi, Gumla and Lohardaga districts. There is no separate village of Chikbaraik tribe. They live with other caste and tribes in the same villages. Like Karmali, Lohara and Mahli, Chikbaraik are called as artisan tribe because there main occupation has been making cotton threads and clothes. They speak Mundari, Sadari and Hindi. They belong to proto-anstraloid racial stock.

 

 

Economy: The economy of the Chikbaraik is characterised by weaving, collection of forest produce, trapping of birds, agriculture and work and wages.

 

The weaving of clothes has been the traditional occupation of the Chikbaraik. Men, women and children are busy in the job from morning to evening.

 

 

Political: The Chikbaraik have their own community panchayat in which Chikbaraik of the neighbouring villages are members. As they live in a mixed village, so the village head is also their head and the village priest is also their priest. In the community panchayat handle the cases related to inter tribe marriage, adultery, rape, property division, cruel behaviour and divorce. The decision of the community panchayat is obeyed by all.

 

 

Religion: The religion of the Chikbaraik is the mixture of Tribal and Hindus beliefs. They belief in Singbonga  as supreme deity and Devi Mai as supreme Goddesses. They also belief in Gram Deo, Dhiwar Deo, Pitar Deo, Nag Deo, Bagh Deo, Burheia Dei. They celebrate festival like Sarhul, Sohrai, Karma, Nawakhani, Durga Devi Puja, Phagun, Ramnawmy etc. 

 

 

Woman: The Chikbaraik women are also very industrious by nature. They not only perform household work whole heartedly and take active part in the socialisation of the children, but they also take active part in wearing and earning wages.

 

 

Children: The Chikbaraik children are loved very much by the community members. They enjoy full freedom to play and cooperate in the family work. They are also enrolled in the school.

 

 

Youth: The Chikbaraik youth are the labour force of the community. But mostly they are illiterate and uneducated. Being uneducated, they are engaged in traditional family occupation or earn their livelihood by wage earning.
